The United Nations Center for Human Settlements (Habitat) is the focal point for the United Nations activities in the field of human settlements, The overall objective for human settlements development is to improve the social, economic, and environmental quality of human settlements and the living and working conditions and environments of the population, particularly the urban and rural poor. The mandate of Habitat has global and national dimensions. Global issues are addressed through research, training, and information activities. At national level, Habitat provides technical assistance, focusing on supporting governments in the formulation of policies and strategies for the creation and strengthening of self-reliant management capacities at both national and local levels.
