The United Nations Environment Programme is set up to catalyze, coordinate and stimulate action within the UN system, Its mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of generations. With its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP maintains close cooperation with all countries through its 6 regional offices.

UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), covers the largest geographical area of all the regions. ROAP's activities aim at underlining the catalytic and coordinating role of UNEP and its Governing Council's responsibilities for promoting international cooperation in the field of the environment. It also provides policy guidance for environmental programs within the United Nations system. ROAP gives technical advice and assistance, and fellowship awards; promotes environmental awareness; implements technical cooperation projects under trust funds; supports UNEP-implemented or UNEP-coordinated projects and provides inputs and support for activities of other UN agencies, international organisations, and regional and national bodies.
