The Universal Postal Union (UPU) became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1948 to assist the postal sector in its 189 member countries worldwide in improving and developing their postal services. In 199 1, six UPU Regional Adviser offices were set up to strengthen the role of UPU in the field. Two of these cover the Asian and Pacific region, one located in Jakarta and the other in Bangkok.
