Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai to lead Thai people, UN family in celebration

International Year of Volunteers, UN Day Run, UN Colouring Book among highlights

The 56th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations will be celebrated with a variety of activities to mark United Nations Day on 24 October 2001. The Foreign Minister of Thailand, H.E Mr. Surakiart Sathirathai will inaugurate the event.

ON Wednesday, 24 OCTOBER the official ceremony will take place from 8:30-10:15 a.m. at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok. The programme includes a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a formal ceremony where Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai will deliver remarks. A video message from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be shown. Mr. Robert England, UNDP Resident Representative, and Mr. Ilawat Chandraprasert, Chairperson of International Year of Volunteers, Thai National Committee and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Thailand, will speak on the International Year of Volunteers and the Thai Volunteers Declaration.

The observance continues with the launch of a new UN Colouring Book, and an exhibition on the theme “International Year of Volunteers.” Other exhibitions include the Sai Jai Thai Foundation, Royal Projects, sale of stamps and philatelic exhibition by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and Communication Authority of Thailand (CAT), Thai Meteorological Department, paintings from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Red Cross Society, Goodwill Industries of Thailand, Girl Guide Association, offices under the Thai Committee of Social Welfare, Thailand, Amnesty International Thailand and the Body Shop.
