The damage sustained to the environment is also impacting on people's livelihoods, especially in sectors like tourism and fishing. The tsunami is an opportunity to re-evaluate approaches to coastal management and tourism planning.

The UN is dedicated to strengthening sound environmentally friendly practices in Thailand. As well as collaboration with the Royal Thai Government on coastal rehabilitation projects, agencies and partners are also focusing on long term planning for sustainable resource management.

These programmes envisage improved livelihood security of local communities through better land use planning with buffer zones, environment-conscious natural resource utilization, and public awareness information to promote environment friendly development programmes in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and education sectors.
